Cobblestones in Pilsen: Přijď zítra

Divoká rvačka a nadávky, policie, výčitky. Ne.

Come tomorrow

The coffee machine sneezes. Continuously, it wouldn’t stop for a minute. The sound is like a polar bear snoring, not having a wife to poke its side, hold its nose shut or just lightly stroke its chest. I try not to listen. I recall that yesterday night at the place I drank the final rounds of beer there was a party. Only the girlfriend of the DJ writhed lonely in front of the speakers, without any inhibition. She went to the tables, got hold of the visitors’ heads and started to shake them. She even rubbed her butt on the crotch of a fifty-something man in order to got somebody to move besides her. Unsuccessful. The coffee machine just buzzes, there’s not as much steamed milk in the world as the amount the waitress makes. Must be a Guinness Record, two hectoliters in forty minutes; on the cover of tomorrow’s paper, a girl with tired eyes poses in black apron, her hand is blurry, must have been shaking of exhaustion. Droplets of sweat gleam on her forehead as the lanterns of the Christmas fair booths in the square. Her smile is genuine however, managed to do it. The difficulty of the morning video chats. My fiancée sees me on the screen, but only fragments of tape voice reaches her during the milk steaming. She looks at me and shakes her head. Why couldn’t you go to a reasonable place to Skype this time? ‘A place where people don’t drink coffee in the morning is not a reasonable place’ I would answer, but I rather stop. This much steamed milk is really unnatural. I specifically ordered an espresso, so at least that wouldn’t be loud. Like the music yesterday in the pub. The girlfriend of the DJ keeps wriggling, closes her eyes and appears to really enjoy it. She throws her hair back, her tits bounce, yet her movements are a bit exaggerated as if made only for the looks. For at least one more person to dance with her, to feel the throbbing bass in her forehead, open their mouth and scream inaudibly in the music, puke on the floor, be taken out by the security guards, be at peace again and let the whole story repeat from the beginning. Would you like anything else? The waitress moves the empty cup. Yes, tea, black. Without steamed milk - but I don’t say it aloud. While she goes back to the counter we can talk a little, the screen smiles back at me, pre-work smile. The unpredictable one. When you don’t know yet what will happen today, how many people you’ll need to fight with; anyway. But she’s happy, likes to look at me even when I’m hung-over. There’s peace in the corner of her mouth, she awaits me home, she says. It was a mistake to order tea; the hot water also comes from the coffee machine with as much noise as with the milk steamer operates. I’m losing it. On the top of it all, a customer comes in, I don’t know the language, but I understand that he ordered a milked coffee. Surely he asked for a lot of steamed milk, the bastard. There’s no justice. Even yesterday I only went to the pub to video chat, but it was impossible with the music. Of course it was only an excuse to drink beer. And the girlfriend just danced there tirelessly. After a while she didn’t even care is someone else was dancing or not. From that point she only concentrated inside. Her movements changed like a cyclist riding again after a fall. She did the same, but somehow differently. Peace set on her face, she smoked less of her cigarette, arms circling airily over her head. I need to redial my finacée, the connection broke. Knock out that waitress, she says. Let me hear you at least while we have the connection. How would that go down? The scholar from abroad lifts his thick walled mug, still some tea on the bottom, which even scalds the left ear a little before the bursting of the porcelain fragments on the face. Wild scuffling and swearing, police, remorse. No. You know it’s silly. Tomorrow I’ll go to another place. It’s only the waitress’ third shift anyway. She’ll get better. Even I don’t believe these sentences. Come tomorrow we’ll meet here again at the same time, not hearing each other’s voice just like today. Just like the girlfriend of the DJ didn’t hear the bartender last night, when he wanted to close the place. She continued to dance without music. But the people in  the café just keep eating their steamed milk by their tables, just keep staring at the idiot who argues with his laptop in the corner over a cooled off tea.
